Local Citations: Why Your Name, Address, and Phone Need to Match

A local citation is any place online that lists your business name, address, and phone number: Google, Facebook, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, your chamber of commerce, industry directories. When those listings match, customers and search engines trust them. When they don’t, both get confused.

Why consistency matters

Search engines compare your listings across the web to confirm your business details. If one says “Smith Plumbing LLC” on Main St and another says “Smith’s Plumbing & Drain” with an old phone number, it muddies the picture. Customers who find the old number, of course, just can’t reach you.

Start with your “source of truth”

Write down exactly how your business should appear, and use it everywhere:

  • Business name, exactly as registered or branded
  • Street address (or service area, if you hide your address)
  • Main phone number
  • Website address
  • Hours

Fix the big ones first

  1. Google Business Profile
  2. Your own website, in the footer and on the contact page
  3. Facebook and any other social profiles you use
  4. Bing Places and Apple Business Connect
  5. Yelp, BBB, and your chamber of commerce
  6. Directories specific to your industry

Find the old listings

Search for your business name, your old phone number, and any old addresses. Old listings often linger after a move or rebrand. Most directories let you claim and update your listing; some require contacting support.

Don’t pay for hundreds of listings

Services that promise to put you on hundreds of directories are rarely worth it. A handful of accurate, relevant listings matters far more than a pile of obscure ones.

Keep it up to date

Whenever something changes (new phone number, new hours, a move), update your website and Google first, then work through the rest of your list. Keep that list somewhere handy so you don’t have to hunt for logins each time.

Questions I hear a lot

Do citations still matter for SEO?

Accurate listings still help, mainly by confirming your details and helping customers find you. Your Google Business Profile and website matter most.

What if I work from home?

Use a service area instead of a street address where directories allow it, and keep that consistent too.
